East Cambridgeshire

The District of East Cambridgeshire, with a population of almost 63,000, is one of the smallest within the County. It covers an area of almost 162,000 acres stretching from the Fens in the north to Newmarket in the south. The University City of Cambridge is only 15 miles away.

The area lies at the heart of an efficient communications network. Easy access to the A14, national motorway network and the rail network provide good links to other centres, including Cambridge and London.

East Cambridgeshire is very much a growth district; with the County Structure Plan envisaging significant redevelopment.

The countryside in East Cambridgeshire District is characterised by two major landscape types which are very different from each other, hi the north of the District, the Fens forms one of the richest farming regions in Europe. Its topography is generally open, flat and low-lying, offering almost uninterrupted views. In the south of the District, the landscape is influenced by the geology of the area. The chalk gives a distinctive character to the countryside, the land is rolling and well wooded, and mixed farming predominates. The area is famous for its beautiful sunsets and sunrises.
