Bottisham is one of a series of villages known as 'shore' villages. When they were built, shore villages were along the shores of the watery Fens.
Bottisham has a Lode, referring to the watercourse.
It is a large, attractive village with a population of a little over 3,640. Close by is Anglesey Abbey, a beautiful Tudor house owned by the National Trust. The Fairhaven Collection of paintings and furniture can be seen here and the gardens are spectacular. The 18th-century Lode Watermill is sited in the grounds.
