Burwell

With a population of some 5,860, the large village of Burwell, between Ely and Newmarket, is very attractive with several handsome old houses and one of the best Perpendicular churches in the county, partly flint and dating back to the 13th century.

There was a castle at Burwell outside which one of the great rebels in the Fens took refuge and was killed by an arrow.

Burwell has a windmill, built of clunch, which is about 150 years old (open by appointment). Next door is the village's museum in a 17th-century timber barn. Displays include settings of interiors and farm buildings. It is well worth a visit.
